    The calculus of variations is a field of mathematics concerned with minimizing (or maximizing) functionals (that is, real-valued functions whose inputs are functions). The calculus of variations has a wide range of applications in physics, engineering, applied and pure mathematics, and is intimately connected to partial differential equations.   Now we examine integral calculus in multiple dimensions. Just as a partial derivative allows us to differentiate a function with respect to one variable while holding the other variables constant, we will see that an iterated integral allows us to integrate a function with respect to one variable while holding the other variables constant.
