Director of Waking Famagusta and Founder/Creative Director of The Famagusta Ecocity Project; A painter originally, Vasia completed her first documentary short in Hidden in the Sand is a chronicle of her mother’s hometown under Turkish occupation, which is now off limits within the six-square kilometer fenced off abandoned district of Varosha. An Ecocity is a human settlement modeled on the self sustaining resilient structure and function of natural ecosystems. The ecocity provides healthy abundance to its inhabitants without consuming more (renewable) resources than it produces, without producing more waste than it can assimilate, and without being toxic to itself or neighboring.

Join us at the Ecocity World Summit from Oct 7 - 11, in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. Ecocity brings together a diverse mix of researchers, policy makers, city-building professionals, business innovators, and civil society leaders who share a commitment to creating socially just and ecologically sustainable cities. Richard Register first coined the term " ecocity " in his book Ecocity Berkeley: Building Cities for a Healthy Future, where he offers innovative city planning solutions that would work anywhere.

The grassroots project — the brainchild of Greek Cypriot-American Vasia Markides — aims to transform the ghost town into a model eco-city, preserve local character, generate revenue for the debt-ridden country and provide a forward-thinking example of planning in a drought-prone country plagued by overdevelopment. The next new wave in city planning is “Eco-City” in response to global climate changes crisis. It is a relatively new concept, combining together ideas from several disciplines such as urban design, urban planning, transportation, health, housing, energy, economic development, natural habitats, public participation, and social justice (Register ).
